Artist Statement

My images have, for many years, reflected somewhat impulsive responses to ideas about the nature of existence and experience, being largely immediate, painterly and expressive in character. Over the past few years, however, my art has been as much concerned with political and social issues as with existentialist matters. These newer themes are accompanied by a more methodical, reflective approach to image making, constructing layers of visual information, often with appropriated family or historical photographs. This forced proximity of visually disconnected images can suggest a narrative, joining diverse ideas, experiences and emotions and providing a vehicle for social, cultural or political self-examination.
